No Improvement.. how long do you have to wait to see any at all?

Hi I have a 7.5 year old and we have been doing the Dore program since October and we have not seen one tiny bit of improvement in our son, in fact we are thinking it has gone worse since he came off the Fish Oils to do Dore.  I am feeling very disheartened.  I have been called in to school yet again to day for behaviour issues, mainly fidgeting and shouting out in class amongst a few other things.. we are hauled in week after week.. I was expecting some improvement by now but we have none.. We have a son who's self esteem is in tatters and mine is not much better.. I am worn out and exhausted with all the problems with school and I feel like a terrible mother as I have been on and on at my son for his behaviour and now he dislikes himself very much, but is not able to change it seems.

My son suffers from ADHD tendencies, e.g. fidgeting/shouting out/impulsive and difficulty in concentration and difficulty in applying maths to real life.  He is brilliant at Literacy and reading/spelling and remembering numbers e.g. times tables, but cannot apply it at all.

Has anyone had improvements after 6 months or am I being premature?  What are mental tasks?   My husband was very skeptical about Dore and I was so for it but I am beginning to feel that we are wasting our time and we are going to be left as we were before.. I don't know where else to turn.. I live in hope that someone can offer me some glimmer of hope or assurance that they felt like me and it still worked in the end???????????

     Thanks,

hi Dan's mum, to be honest both my husband and myself were skeptical at first. my son as yours got worses when cutting back on the fish oils and he stopped sleeping, but it will get better this may be slow but the way i looked at it was let jack stay as he is or try this, its only 18 months (fingers crossed ) out of our life and at least its a chance ,it is hard i know but you must persevere  keep in touch and let me know how things are  xx Jackie p.s mental tasks are still doing the same exercises but the child has to speak fluently at the same time whether your asking questions or they are answering mathematical sums anyway don't worry about them they'll let you no when your son is ready to start them

Hi Dan's mum. I think you're at the worst phase at the moment. My daughter Eleanor now 14 has just finished the programme, it took her a year but the three primary school age boys I know who have been through it all took the full 2 years. We certainly found that for the first few months everything, reading, writing, balance, concentration, memory all got worse, much worse, her SENCo was so alarmed at her balance walking along the school corridor she gave Eleanor a note to leave lessons 5 minutes early to avoid crashing into other people!

The turning point for us came at 7 months, but many younger children seem to have taken much longer.

Stick with it and I so hope you'll start to see improvements.

Thank you so much for your response.. It has give me some hope that things will improve.. Thanks for taking the time to let me know! I just hope I can survive the next year or so.. Dore told me a year at the most when I signed up.. My husband will be very disheartened that it can take up to 2 years and I suppose I wish they had told me that from the beginning...But at least there is some hope, so thanks again!

Hi Dansmum my daughter Leila did not show any improvement until she was 7 months into Dore and she is now over 2 years post Dore. Sometimes we are looking for the dramatic changes to occur when in fact it is the minute changes which will come first which we are apt to miss. With Leila it was tying shoe laces, doing up her own buttons and eating with a knife and fork instead of having to use a spoon. Small changes which we may not have even realised were a part of their problems, but these are the necessary stepping stones that have to be built before their main areas will start to show a improvement.

I always look at it as putting the pieces of a puzzle together our children have development gaps within the puzzle which have never been filled, Dore fills those gaps until the picture is complete and finally our children can learn as they should without the difficulties which hindered their development. As each gap is filled an area of difficuty our children had will be able to finally be achieved making it so much easier for the next piece to be found.Their learning ability will develop once the necessary pieces are in place.

Your sons behaviour problems will also be addressed as he goes through Dore, you are not the only one who has felt dispair and frustration with their childs progress. But the difference is you ar doing something about it by undertaking Dore. Like I say look for the small things first and then you will know it is working and all of his other problems will follow. Hope this helps. Ellie XXX

Ellie mum to Leila 2 years post Dore who is now finally able to learn on a par with her peers at school and Kieran aged 7 commenced Dore 7th January 2008
