    My son Hugo

Hi everyone, this is my first time I have commented on my son Hugo who is 9 years old and has being doing the Dore programme for 8 months now.  He is quite badly dyslexic and also has problems with numbers. I was told at the start that it would probably take 18months + to get results.  To date Hugo has made progress on his equilibrium and sensory results but it is very slow and the only change I can see is that he can now read without having to put his finger on the words to follow text.  I do worry about him, he is just such a lovely little boy - so positive and always trying his best.  We just recently got turned down to a school that has a specialist unit for dyslexia ("we don't have enough students of Hugo's ability") saying Hugo needed too much 1:1.  Obviously very upsetting news  - more for us the parents as Hugo just takes it all in his stride.

Reading other peoples notes we too had bad days in the beginning.   Lots of crying, and frustration, but he does them now religiously.  I just hope we get there in the end.  It would be a miracle if he could just be equal to his peers and gain some friends which he finds so hard to keep.

    Re: My son Hugo

Hi Sara welcome to the forum can I just say how can a school with a dyslexic center turn away a child because their dyslexia will mean they need more help than the school can give!!!! This is just like those who will not be accepted for the dyslexia day centre here because they are not dyslexic enough. So in other words how many of those children thoughout the UK who have a diagnosis of dyslexia are getting that help???????

Do not worry Sara as you say Hugo is already showing improvements in his equilibrium and sensory areas the rest will follow when it is ready. Leila did not start to learn at school until she commenced her mentals and then she strode ahead. In one way it is good that Hugo does not worry about his problems but he could well be like Leila was and this is part of their problem of being permanently in "the fog". This was why it took till the mentals for Leila once the fog finally lifted.

I never thought with Leila's global issues that she would ever be on a par with her peers, but a miracle occurred for her and I have always said if Dore could help Leila then they will help anyone.  She was on a par 9 months after finishing Dore where she was 2 years behind at the beginning. So have faith Sara keep going as you are and just look out for the changes. Ellie XXX

Ellie mum to Leila 2 years post Dore who is now finally able to learn on a par with her peers at school and Kieran aged 7 commenced Dore 7th January 2008

    Re: My son Hugo

Hi Sarah, My son has just finished the program, it actully took over two years, so do'nt be in too much of a rush to finished. They were so patient with Thomas. He still has problems with maths( i think he always will) , but the improvments we have seen have been amazing. Before he started, he'd have horrendous tempers, he'd pysically attact me, his Dad & his little brother, he really frighten me when he was in on of his rages. We keep going to parents evenings & i'd expect them to say something was wrong, i'd sort of ask them about his behaviour, expecting them to be concerned, but they never did, just said "oh thats just Thomas" . I always knew something was'nt right with him, so when we entered the Dore program, it was like "yes somebodies listening" Keep working hard with the exersises, they get easier in time. Thomas still can't ride a bike, we are working on that one!! Our boy is now a joy to have around, he can talk for England!! He no longer an angry boy . Good luck & try to make the exersises fun!           Catherine Marshallxxx
