What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed behavioural disorder amongst children, affecting somewhere between 3 and 5% of children globally. Symptoms are often recognisable before children reach the age of seven.

Boys are two times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls and although previously considered a disorder that only affected children, ADHD can continue throughout adulthood. Now around 30 – 50% of children diagnosed with ADHD will continue to have symptoms once they become adults.

Over time as individuals affected by ADHD mature, they develop ways of coping with the disorder so as to compensate for their impairment, often know as coping mechanisms or strategies.
